The title of the work takes its cue from the fresco by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, painted around 1340 in a hall of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, in which the frescoes depict the allegories of Good Government and Bad Government, both populated by allegorical figures: they were meant to guide the conduct of the city's governors, who met in those halls.
The installation represents one cubic metre of concrete which, placed on the ground, presses down on plants and flowers, weighed down by the sheer heaviness of the material. Despite this, nature attempts to reclaim its space, struggling to push back up through the soil.
The work stages what has happened over recent decades in Mariano Comense, in Brianza, and more broadly across the whole of Italy, where green spaces have given way to profit — a process only partly slowed by the economic crisis.
