Flex is a chrome die-cast door handle, produced using the pressure die-casting technique — also known as permanent-mold casting. This particular casting process involves injecting molten metal at high pressure into a metal mold.
The mold, more properly called a "die" for metals, consists of two half-dies, generally made of steel or cast iron; the metals used in the process are therefore those with lower melting points, such as aluminium, zinc or magnesium alloys. Injection pressure of the molten metal can range from 2 to 150 MPa depending on the case, and is maintained throughout the process until solidification is complete, while hydraulic presses keep the mold closed even under high pressure.
A liquid circulation system inside the mold ensures the part cools correctly. Once solidified and cooled, the presses open the two half-dies so the piece can be removed.
