Gost is an adjustable table lamp made in glass: a design intended to emphasise the symbolic, ethereal qualities of light through the transparency of the material.
The subject is the light, not the lamp. Visual impact was reduced to a minimum, even while using a noble material such as glass, to create an object suspended between the emotional and the rational.
The lamp's components are laboratory glassware, used for experiments and other scientific work, particularly in chemistry and biology labs. Glass is still used in many applications because it is relatively inert, transparent, more heat-resistant than plastic, and relatively easy to shape as required. For Gost, borosilicate glass was used in particular, also known by the commercial name Pyrex, because it withstands thermal stress better than ordinary glass.
