Split is a container in solid wood, hand-curved starting from a flat rectangular board routed along the full length of its longer edges. The routing cuts through the wood grain to make it easier to bend the sides of the board, achievable with simple manual mechanical means.
The first technique for curving wood involves cutting and gluing: this is known as artificial bending. A more natural form of curving instead involves wetting the wood fibres to make them more flexible for the curve to be applied — in this context, it is also referred to as steam bending.
